This was the question I asked students when they began class a few weeks ago. They were then asked to display their understanding with a drawing. Most visual responses looked something like the image below. It is clear that the student had a basic understanding of the direction of the shadow, but not of the shape.

After this fifteen minute drawing, the students and I put this question to practice (perhaps you were wondering what the ghoul-looking figures on the asphalt were about?).
I was amazed to witness the immediate and obvious growth displayed after this activity. Suddenly, the shadow-like blobs began to resemble figures!
